From Root to Sky

A journey of self-discovery inspired by trees

Green Iowa AmeriCorps members are required to complete a professional development project during their service term. For hers, Eden created a journal centered around trees and our many connections to them, with illustrations done by fellow member Bri.

About the Author

Eden is a member of Green Iowa AmeriCorps, looking forward to a second year of service with Sustainable Schools. She is a mother, writer, yogi, and nature lover who dreams of helping others heal through self-love and connection with the Earth.

"I found my voice telling stories at the age of four, and when I learned how to write, I fell in love. Writing has been my companion through every season of life, and this journal feels like the culmination of what I have learned on my journey thus far. The trees have been such dear friends and mentors to me, and my hope in creating this journal is that you too will see yourself in their resilience and beauty."

About the Illustrator

Bri is a Green Iowa AmeriCorps member currently serving at the Tallgrass Prairie Center. She first began drawing the world around her while in high school in Kansas City, MO.

"I honestly got emotional when creating these illustrations, especially the tree ring map. As I continued working through the individual pieces, I found myself paying more attention to small details, especially in the winter. My personal favorite illustration was the bloodroot coming out of the decaying leaves. I feel that we all have these points in our lives and can relate to this beautiful plant that grows from what seems like nothing. Thank you Eden for giving me this opportunity!"
