Green Iowa AmeriCorps has several high school students serving across the state of Iowa, and Caroline Mascardo has interviewed and put together profiles for all 7 Members. Meet our final interviewee, Emma Sliwinksi, a Sustainable Schools Member serving with the Cedar Falls Community School District.
Before studying chemical engineering at Northwestern University this fall, Emma Sliwinski will spend her summer serving as a Green Iowa AmeriCorps Sustainable Schools member in the Cedar Falls Community School District. She first heard about the position with GIA after a high school teacher sent out a flyer to her class.
“I applied for a position with Green Iowa because I am interested in sustainability, and a job that allowed me to be involved with that sounded really cool,” Emma said. “Plus, working with AmeriCorps seemed like a great way to make a difference in my community.”
While working in the CFCSD, Emma looks forward to organizing educational events geared toward younger audiences and learning about environmental stewardship. As a recent high school graduate, she can bring both a professional and student perspective to her work to create change in her community.
“I will bring my perspective as a high school student to my work because I went to school in the district that I am serving with,” Emma said. “I know how things work in the schools, and I think that will help me know where they can improve and how I can best help.”
